The Hermitage & Rosencrantz House - Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey
The Hermitage is a National Historic Landmark, comprised of the Hermitage itself, the Rosencrantz House, and the remaining five acres of land. Working with Princeton architects Farewell, Mills & Gatsch, VS&R developed a visitor experience Master Plan consisting of a Visitor Center, outdoor interpretive signage and stops, wayfinding signage, and a History Discovery Center, which includes the creation of "The Hermitage Kid's Club". The "Hermitage Kid;s Club" is designed to create a base of consistent visitation, cultivate a strong members' program, and support school groups. It uses a sense of adventure to captivate children's imaginations as they explore the home of a family of collectors from the Victorian era, filled floor-to-ceiling with interesting objects, like a giant curiosity cabinet. Each room has a different interpretive focus appealing to a variety of interests and ages.
